The zmeu (dragon) “blows fire out of his mouth and obtains a wavy, purplish tail, which grows two flags on either side and sharp wings. With his wings he swims, and with his tongue, with fire he flies in the clouds. (…) The zmeu is an aerial being with fantastic attributes: he pours fire through his mouth, walks “with one jaw in the sky and with another in the ground”, and on his head carries a precious stone that shines “like the sun”. He is dominated by eroticism, for this reason his occupation is the kidnapping of beautiful girls. In Hora and Neda dances, they land to complete their abductions, often descending with the appearance of attractive young men”. (Ovidiu Bîrlea, Small Encyclopedia of Romanian stories, 1976)
