In Romanian popular culture it is said that every witch has devils in her house (they are a kind of semi-domesticated beasts, which take the place of pets): “Every witch has devils. Whoever has one sends him to the tavern on Sundays, to spread quarrel among the people, on Monday sends it to the fair in Chernivtsi to play pranks, to ruin the business, to bring money; on Tuesday he rests, and on Wednesdays he is ready to work; therefore, on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays it is good to go to the witch”. From the same text we also find out where the witches buy their devils, because they do not appear through invocations, as we could have imagined: “The witches buy it in Storozhynets (*in current-day Ukraine*); there is a hag who bears them and on the day of the fair she takes them there in a basket to be sold. People give two chicks (20 Kreuzers) and take the little ones as they might kittens, for whatever they need”. (Elena Niculiță-Voronca, Traditions and Beliefs of the Romanian people, 1903)
