Wouter Dam (b. 1957) creates ceramic forms that have an architectonic clarity. Their surfaces attaining a degree of precision and evenness that seems unexpected in a hand-made object. These qualities are nevertheless off-set by a sensuality present both in the curvature of the forms and in the velvety texture of their surfaces.
The sculptures are deconstructed vase shapes, assembled out of pieces made on the potters wheel.
Dam’s architect father encouraged him to explore form and beauty from a young age. In 1975, he enrolled at The Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam where he began his exploration of shape and volume, which continues to fascinate him today. Dam’s work is exhibited internationally and is included in numerous collections including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and the Detroit Institute of Art among others
