Jantien Jongsma’s makes intricate drawings, featuring dense compositions evoking folkloric tales. While some of the stories refer to practices of a specific community -such as the Kukeri festival in Romania- others have been developed by the artist in an act of self-myth making, taking her own memories as a starting point to thread personal fairytales.
The title Love is in the Air is taken from the 70s hit by John Paul Young. At the center of the work is a diamond shape, at the bottom the drawing is closed by a gate, at the top by a semicircle whith shining rays.
The houses and rows of dancers are depicted in a naive perspective, always facing the window in the center. An enormous amount of detail is scattered throughout the work of houses, animals, people dancing and making love. As a result, the work is related to naive art in which the entire surface is filled in almost obsessively.
