With reliefs, objects and site-specific installations, visual artist Mark Kramer (1973) explores concepts such as emptiness, lightness and stillness. His work arises from a fascination with 'light and emptiness' and is characterized by dotted lines, dot fields and dot spaces with which he accentuates surfaces, shapes and (empty) spaces. From 2010 he works on monochrome abstract compositions in panel or paper, where point structures are made by drill perforations. The perforations in the white area create a play between light and dark. The amount of holes, the amount of piercing and the depth of the drilling hole determine the relief. In addition, the layers of paper, the distance of the mutual holes, the distance between lines and the rhythm of a pattern form the final image. It is a visual game between holes, dots and lines.
The final image and its meaning are determined by; The act, the drilling, the uselessness of the action. The perforation, the stratification of the matter, the depth, the play of light and darkness in the case of multiple perforations next to each other and the residual material, the cuttings that remain as a kind of ash.
