During a three-month period, Vincent stayed in both Tokyo and Sapporo. In Sapporo, he worked in a studio at the Tenjinyama Art Studio and exhibited at the Naebono Art Studio. Through learning, observation, presentation and the creation of new works, he has explored how his calligraphic art practice relates to Japan.
This project is a collaboration with the K.F. Hein Fonds in Utrecht and is based on a mutual understanding of how Vincent's art practice can draw on Japanese contemporary art and craft traditions. In his work, he experiments with an autonomous contemporary interpretation of a centuries-old craft, resulting in a tension between two extremes.
Vincent's experiences in Japan have led to a series of works in which calligraphy, the Kanji character and the language barrier are central.
