IAN PAGE, Novel model folding chair, 2020
Ian Page interest is drawn by the Shakers' simple lifestyles (18th century), their female religious leadership, and especially their basic furniture design. The austere style of their chair designs led him to create a small series of four 'Novel model folding chairs'. The folding chairs have been flattened and the metal tubes have been replaced by upright cardboard channels covered with rubber paint. The course of these channels creates a closed system. This can be compared to the self-sufficient economically closed system that the Shakers used.
If this work is not hanging but installed on the floor, Page prefers to add water in the hollow spaces. A supplied rotor with paddle ensures that the water in the channels is set in motion.
The work "Novel model folding chair" shown here in the photo was installed by Ian Page. Barely visible, it is hung a few centimeters above the gallery floor.
