Several of the watercolours in The Wait exhibition feature young immigrants. For these portraits, Nour-Eddine Jarram took as a starting point images posted by the same subjects on social media. This results in interesting depictions, because it is precisely social media where users have the opportunity to portray themselves in an idealized way. Who do these young people want to be? They pose confidently, in a self-assured way, accompanied by the modern day paraphernalia of cell phones, brand clothing and watches. Is this idealized portrayal a response to the institutional and social discrimination experienced by the immigrant community? Is it a symptom of youth seeking identity in an uncertain environment? In this sense, these teenagers are depicted from two points of view: by the artist gazing at its subjects, and by the subjects looking in the mirror.
