VOEBE DE GRUYTER
Opal Avenue, 2018-2020
This installation is based on a studio visit paid by Voebe the Gruyter somewhere in Brussels, already in 2016.
Voebe de Gruyter: 'The studio visit is on the fifth floor of an apartment building from the 50s, at 138 Opal Avenue in Schaarbeek. If you look out of the window on your left you see Belgium’s largest Public Broadcast Tower. It was built during the 70s. Remarkable is that the television, furniture, magazines and books in the apartment also date from that time. Patrick van Bael lives here since he was a child with his father, who died in 1975.
In a stuffed back room he shows me his extraterrestrial artwork. There are dozens of detailed colored pencil drawings from Martians, their habits and working equipment and exquisite precious stone collections, dug up on Mars.'
