In a brand new series of works on paper, the Ancient Roman and Byzantine tradition to adorn ones walls within both domestic and public interiors is researched, explored and reimagined. These rich, highly decorative, illusionistic and ever evolving styles of frescoes would tell stories of the lives of those who commissioned them and indeed express the functionality of the spaces they were situated in. They ranged from the most humble of scenes to the mythological, and often, to the outright absurd. In every pocket of society both ‘high’ and ‘low’, an interior story could be found. ‘2020 AD’ is an ode to such a tradition. A year defined by four walls, interior space and isolation for so many. Here, the frescoes adorning the walls tell the story of my 2020.
