Carceri I, 2017

Carceri dei Danni Collaterali (Prisons of Collateral Damage) 2017 - 2021 By merging multiple images of bombed and destroyed buildings in Syria, Weistra creates Carceri dei Danni Collaterali (Prisons of Collateral Damage). The title references Giovanni Battista Piranesi's 16 famous prison etchings Carceri d'Invenzione (1745/1761). These etchings were created in a tradition called capriccio, fantasy aggregations of structures that didn’t exist in real life. With his Carceri dei Danni Collaterali, Weistra creates contemporary 'aggregation of structures'; compilations and assemblages of bombed buildings that symbolize the prisons Syrian civilians are forced to live in, being unable to leave their cities under attack.
