In Liquid, Pieke Bergmans seems to release glass from its fixed character. The mouth-blown glass flows across the surface, changing shape as it moves. The broad, organic base and the upright form appear to have emerged from a single continuous movement.
The transparent blue-green colour reinforces the sense of fluidity. Light, reflections and distortions are captured within the glass, causing the surface to change continually. The sculpture moves between object, volume and liquid.
Bergmans explores the properties and possibilities of glass by allowing the material to occupy space in a way that seems almost impossible. In Liquid, glass takes on an unexpected softness and sense of movement. It appears not so much formed as flowed, stretched and settled — as if a moment of liquid movement had been captured in glass.
