The works in the Note To Self series stem from a desire to reveal the material itself—the wood in its own right. By making a simple woodcut print from a piece of wood, Burger brings its natural structure to the surface. The printed piece of wood then becomes part of the work itself.
The paper is handmade in Japan by Rogier Uitenboogaart, who cultivates his own plants for its production. The longer, thicker fibres that he mixes into the pulp become clearly visible in the woodcut print, creating an interplay of lines with the grain and cracks of the wood.
The frame, whose UV-protective museum glass has been cut open, represents the structures that maintain the separation between humans and the rest of the living world.
