The work of Nathalie Brans
Nathalie Brans observes. The sun, the moon, the stars, the materials, the light, the form – everything is interconnected in Nathalie Brans’ work. For decades, she has been capturing the light and the celestial bodies, translating them into images we can see. Sometimes these are images of the process itself, but often she also creates a new galaxy or a series of eclipses.
Using her telescope, she takes photographs of the moon, which she prints on rice paper using the cyanotype process. With a homemade pinhole camera, she captures the sun’s paths, translating them into risograph prints. Using her homemade darkroom cabinet, she creates her own eclipses on vintage photographic paper.
Nathalie uses a variety of techniques, but ultimately all her work stems from observation and experimentation. In doing so, she imposes her own constraints, resulting in intriguing compositions.
