Kees van de Wal on his work: My work is based on the idea that art does not depend on exclusive or expensive materials. Through this work, I explore how our perception gives meaning to materials and objects. When does a box cease to be a box and when does it become a work of art? By focusing on a cheap and temporary material, I demonstrate that the extraordinary is often already present in the everyday. Even before these boxes ended up in the waste paper bin, they already held an image for me.
