With the Translucent series, Karen van de Vliet introduces increasingly transparent materials into her practice. What makes the process particularly intriguing is that these layers are not transparent when they are first applied. Initially appearing almost entirely white, they gradually reveal themselves as the work dries, allowing the image to emerge over time.
This marks a shift from her earlier paintings, which often developed through fluid paint and large amounts of water. In these recent works, thicker materials are built up layer by layer, resulting in surfaces that possess a distinctly physical quality. Somewhere between painting and object, the works invite close looking, as colour, light and material continuously influence one another.
