In moving as a mountain (becoming), a mountain seems to be slowly rising into being. The ceramic form emerges from a broad, irregular base and narrows towards an almost vertical peak. Compact and earthy, it nevertheless has a striking sense of lightness and movement.
The surface is built up in layers of brown, ochre, rust, pink and green. Colour and material appear to have shifted across the form, as though the work carries traces of erosion, sediment and time. The ceramic skin is neither smooth nor sealed, allowing the process of making to remain visible.
The title shifts the work from a recognisable mountain form towards something in a state of continual change. Becoming suggests not an end point, but a process: a form developing, transforming and being formed anew.
Spierenburg’s work occupies a space between landscape, body and object. What first appears as a compact, almost geological mass gradually takes on something organic and bodily — as if the form is not simply standing there, but is in the process of coming into being.
