This work was created on the occasion of the exhibition Ver & Nabij and is currently on view as part of that show. Ver & Nabij is on display from 18 January to 6 April 2026 at the Stevenskerk in Nijmegen, where iconic late-medieval art by the Van Lymborch brothers is brought into conversation with contemporary artists including Suzanne Jongmans.
Suzanne Jongmans depicts the human figure in direct connection with the divine in this work. Inspired by the astrological tympanums of the Van Lymborch brothers and the mysticism of lapis lazuli, she uses this deep blue color to evoke the cosmic energy that humans can receive and transform.
The copper headdress refers to transformation and a connection to the higher realm, comparable to the halos surrounding saints in iconography. The lifting of the veils symbolizes a journey of awakening, in which we uncover the blueprint of the universe written in the stars.
