Until 11 July, you get a chance to view the exhibition 'Van den Berge GOES Frank Taal' at Frank Taal Galerie in Rotterdam. For this presentation, Frank Taal Galerie joined forces with Galerie Van den Berge from Goes. The result is an exhibition that brings together artists from both gallery programmes. The identities of the two galleries play a significant role in that: here, the distinctly Rotterdam character of Frank Taal Galerie, with its well-known raw edges, meets the adventurous and independent spirit of Galerie Van den Berge.
The collaboration grew out of the long-standing relationship between gallery owners Joyce van Elzakker, Tom van den Berge and Frank Taal. Over the past twenty years, they have regularly crossed paths at major art fairs, where they developed a mutual appreciation for one another's work. Not only for the artists they represent, but also for the way they work, see and select. Now, the three gallery owners have joined forces as co-curators of an exhibition.
'Van den Berge GOES Frank Taal' demonstrates how seemingly different forms of contemporary art can strengthen one another: both in their contrasts and in the ways in which they are alike. In the exhibition, abstraction, sculpture, painting, photography and installation are presented side by side. That way, the exhibition reveals unexpected and compelling connections between various generations, materials and artistic approaches.
The exhibition also offers visitors a glimpse behind the scenes of the role that galleries can play. They are not only places where art is presented, but also environments in which artistic ideas and visions are nurtured and guided. By bringing together artists from both gallery rosters, the exhibition shows you the choices, interests and conceptual threads that have shaped the two programmes over the years. In doing so, the focus briefly shifts from the individual artwork or exhibition to the broader ecosystem in which art is created and ultimately finds its audience.
The exhibition features work by Isabelle Borges, Bram Braam, Astrid Busch, Saminte Ekeland, Mirjam Hagoort, Frank Halmans, Daan den Houter, Jus Juchtmans, Ditty Ketting, Ton van Kints, Florens Kool, Marilou van Lierop, Tim Mastik, Dave Meijer, Jan van Munster, P. B. Van Rossem, Martha Scheeren, and Julia Schewalie.
