The 23rd edition of Art Rotterdam, a special spring edition, will take place this year from Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 May. The location is again the Van Nelle Factory, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During Art Rotterdam, there will be a record number of seventeen large-scale works and installations in the outdoor area, most of them specially created for this occasion. At the same time, there is also much to experience indoors. On a floor area of 10,000 m2, more than a hundred leading national and international galleries show the work of upcoming and established talent. The 23rd edition introduces two valuable innovations: the Projections video section will be given a completely new format and a major expansion is planned for Prospects, the Mondriaan Fund's exhibition.
Outside works
Art Rotterdam 2022 has a spring character; in the outdoor area, leading galleries and project spaces present a record number of impressive outdoor works. With the work De Blauwen, Onno Poiesz welcomes the public. The work is intended to be festive, but is also a reference to war and pandemic, or the contemporary blues that dominate the beginning of 2022.
Tim Wes presents the installation Trauma Triggers Triumph . In this work, Wes, jazz saxophonist, singer and visual artist, shows that the concept of uomo universale is still current. In Trauma Triggers Triumph he tells his story and that of many others with film, music, canvas and objects. There is also a living installation on display in the outdoor area, by artist ToineDutch Bushman Klaassen. The Equilibrium Wind flag is flying on top of the Van Nelle Factory; this flag is part of the project that artist Thierry Oussou has been developing in recent years about the cotton plantations in the Panouignan district of Benin. The flag represents all people who work in the shadows.
Fons Hof, director of Art Rotterdam: ''What is striking about this edition is the high number of socially engaged outdoor presentations with references to the world around us. Climate, pandemic and populism alternate with humor and desire''.
Prospects
This year marks the tenth edition of Prospects, the recurring exhibition of the Mondriaan Fonds at Art Rotterdam. Each year, visitors get to explore work by artists who have recently received a contribution from the Fund, that they can use for the start of their professional practice. New this year is the extension of Prospects to the Expedition Building, directly opposite the Van Nellefabriek. The extension effectively doubles the amount of exhibition space in square meters. This year, visitors can immerse themselves into the work of 88 visual artists.
