Light in Between Lines
Benoît Félix & Johannes Ulrich Kubiak
For Drawing Now Paris 2026 – Process, Eva Steynen Gallery presents Light in Between Lines, a duo exhibition by Benoît Félix and Johannes Ulrich Kubiak, exploring drawing as a process-driven, spatial, and conceptual practice. Benoît Félix (b. 1969) probes the boundary between drawing, image, and object, treating the drawn line as both pictorial illusion and physical presence. Through cutting, lifting, and pinning, his drawings acquire a three-dimensional status, extending beyond the paper into space. This practice interrogates the act of seeing and the ontological status of the drawn gesture, addressing intersections of body, language, and reality. For Drawing Now Paris, a selection of recent large-scale cut-out drawings is presented alongside small, fragile works exemplifying this sustained exploration of the limits and possibilities of drawing today.
Johannes Ulrich Kubiak complements this investigation, working on paper as well as in three-dimensional paper constructions. Through layered pigments, graphite, and photographic fragments, his works emerge and dissolve in a continuous cycle of transformation, reflecting on thresholds between surface and depth.
Together, their works create a dialogue between gesture and structure, control and chance. Light in Between Lines emphasizes drawing as a living, expanded practice, where perception and materiality intersect, and the act of making itself becomes central to understanding the work.
