Ruben Terlou (born 1985) is a photographer and physician, known for his documentary series for VPRO television ‘Langs de oevers van de Yangtze’. Terlou combines journalism, film and photography in his projects, as shown in this photo series, where he takes the viewer on a journey through contemporary China.
The stories of Chinese farmers, workmen, artists and idealists whom Terlou encountered along the way, are captured in his pictures. Terlou’s endearing personality, combined with his fluent Chinese, has resulted in deeply personal portraits. In a country where development occurs at a higher rate than the population is able to comprehend and internalise, unusual situations can arise in daily life.
Ruben Terlou knows how to document the adaptability of the people he meets. At the same time, he shows how human beings always stay faithful to the things they believe in. Fontana also exhibits a selection black & white photographs from his Afghanistan series.
