In this edition of UNSEEN, Galerie Caroline O'Breen is presenting misha de ridder, Anne Geene and Elsa Leydier — a combination of new and well-known names within the gallery.
misha de ridder (NL, 1971) is a visual artist making conceptual photo and video work concerned with perception. His quiet images evoke contemplation and intimacy, invite viewers to look anew at what we consider known and to rethink our surroundings. According to misha de ridder, reality is an act of deep imagination. In his work, mechanical representations produced with the eye of the camera disclose another, almost magical perspective.
As a visual artist, Anne Geene (NL, 1983) captures the hidden beauty of plants and animals. With the help of photography, Geene investigates, collects and organises the world around her. The camera objectively records the materials in which Geene is looking for visual similarities, patterns and phenomena. Eventually her findings are analysed and cataloged according to an apparent logic. Her interpretation of the data is strictly personal and refers to our urge to regulate and understand the world around us.
Elsa Leydier (1988, FR) lives and works between France and Brazil. In her artistic and activist practice, she explores the limits of society through photography, focusing on diverting the political charge of iconic images. Her work challenges conventional representations and proposes ways to reclaim the dominant narratives of visual culture. Borrowing methodologies of ecofeminism, Leydier works with the notions of ecosystems, economies, climate, bodies, and social relations.
