Maura Biava is an Italian artist, based in Amsterdam. Maura Biava was the first artist to create underwater photography in the early 1990s. Accompanied by a photographer and a diver, she herself would dive meters deep into the sea with costumes and objects for a photo series or a video of her performance. Every minute she was supplied with air so that she could stay underwater for an hour.
'Air' is Biava's new underwater photography work.
Maura Biava is intrigued by how forms of the organic world arise according to specific mathematical rules. In her artistic practice, Biava wants to create works of art that follow the same principles. The interaction between information, matter and energy informs and shapes what we see. To show this interaction in her work, she uses (ceramic) objects as matter, mathematics and numbers as information, and her actions as energy.
