ALINE THOMASSEN | THE COLOR OF EMOTION
Aline Thomassen is a contemporary artist who lives and works in the Netherlands and Morocco. She is known for her large-scale paintings and drawings of women. They gaze intensely at us, the spectators. Sometimes with eyes that each hold a different meaning: one dark and probing, the other light and inviting.
The large watercolors start with a background of one color that serves as an environment for the psyche of the woman-to-be.
It could be olive green, rust brown, midnight blue, or yellow. Each color has a meaning. Each version of a work consists of several 'shadow versions' that have been destroyed. Only when she has established the contours for the gaze and expression – for a lock of hair, a waist, a pair of hands simply emerging from a midriff – can she continue working.
The body is then marked with enigmatic forms: as if a conversation arises between the woman and the artist. Where do you want to go, whispers the artist to the depicted figure. What drives you?
