Bains de Midi (Planche), 2013

Longo Maï consists of four companion tapestries: “Bains de midi” and “Bains de minuit”, daytime and night time swimming. The work is made up of images found on the Internet; the magic is caused by the alteration of the medium: from an ephemeral image on Google to a voluminous tapestry in a museum. The bathers, whose bodies are worked in phosphorescent thread, light up in the dark. This is in fact a “vanitas in reverse”: capturing that blissful moment of becoming immersed in the water is at odds with the bodies that light up and fade away again. “Longo Maï“ is a Provençal expression. It means “Let it last“.
