Dambe is a traditional West-African martial art whose origins
date back to the tenth and eleventh centuries. This fierce and violent sport is mainly practised in northern Nigeria by the Hausa people, but it also takes place in the megacity of Lagos. The dominant punching hand, called the ‘spear’, is tightly wrapped in rope, while the other hand of the fighter is called the ‘shield’. The main objective is to knock out the opponent. The game is over when the opponent’s hand or knee touches the ground.
