"Graves" by Lara Almarcegui offers a geological perspective of the area of Lleida and the terrain of the river Segre through the relationship between the built environment and the extensive mountain belt of the Pyrenees, formed between 80 and 20 million years ago when the Iberian Peninsula collided with the rest of Europe.
“Graves” wonders: What possibilities begin to appear when the excavation of a quarry is stopped? More specifically, what happens when La Plana del Corb, the industrial complex of Sorigué near the town of Balaguer, stops working for a day? The answer takes the form of an open day at the quarry on February 19, 2021 during which visitors experience this usually bustling and noisy place as a place of contemplation, as well as a video presenting the quarry frozen in time.
In this new project by Almarcegui, the complicated chasm of the built environment with its stone walls and the overwhelming nature and its derogation. The slow violence of the morphological transformation of the Earth as opposed to the temporary nature of artificial construction.
