“At the time of shooting this portrait in 1997 Philip, aka Alfie, was openly HIV positive, living in a time when the negative stigma around HIV was still prevalent, he was only 21 years old. Alfie was a drag artist performing in the gay scene around Birmingham, he was worried that his deteriorating health would mean that one day he would not be able to perform again. The well-worn ladies sling-back shoes with the strap cut off and the scuffed shoe heels along with the cracked heels are a strong metaphor for what ‘Alfie’ was going through at this time in his life.” Matthew Murray
