Evelyn Taocheng Wang’s new set of banners works; ink drawings on rice paper framed by fabrics. In this new series, relating to language and specifically to English words ending in -er, Wang has for the first time framed the works in other materials than silk or linen. The works are presented in white and black fake leather, fabric with tiger print, latex, rubber woven material and fake felt. The inkwash technique of multiple layers of ink and color creates a meditative temperament that references 7th century Chinese scholar painters, and at the same time reflects Wang's own interpretation of Abstract Expressisionsts Mark Rothko and Minimalist Agnes Martin. The huge contrast between the trashiness of the sensual material and delicateness of elegant rice paper and ink creates a new body of inspiration and experience, connected to art history, cultures and identities.
