ABOUT FEMKE SCHAAP
A sculptor working in light, Femke Schaap (Woerden, 1972) is known for her life-size, spa- tial video-installations, in which she projects film and animation on in silhouette cut-out screens. More than the development of a theatrical story, important to her is the spatial ex- perience and the physical, sculptural confrontation the viewer can have with moving image. The fight between the projected 2-dimensional film and the 3-dimensional placing of the again flat projection screens creates an uncanny field of tension. Cinematic aspects like synchronicity, coincidence and loop-replay are used to further enhance this exchange between the touchable reality and filmic virtuality. Thus Schaap constructs within her instal- lations ephemeral worlds that the viewer literally can walk into. Visiting her installations the viewer is overcome with a sensational experience of an almost tangible irreality, which ge- nerates a childlike joy and enthusiasm.
