Over PHOEBUS Rotterdam
PHŒBUS•Rotterdam , galerie
Since 28. January 1990, yearly I organise in three spaces (gallery space bel etage, drawing cabinet, project room souterrain) about twelve contemporary art exhibitions, plus/including three ‘drawers projects’, in which young and/or well known artists are being asked to place autonomous works and/or an installation in a limited horizontal space (these projects are sometimes organised by curators).
There are a few criteria: the relations between history and surprise, between concept and image and between clarity and complexity have to feel good. The focus is on unique works (less photos and almost no graphic works). Expressionism, constructivism, as well as banalities are being avoided. For me there is no art without personal involvement in the work being made, often with utter specialisation, as well as with an open eye for what happens or happened in the world around, between people, in the tradition of art. Looking at art is fascinating play of comparing art works. Welcome to come and have a look in reality - and see the visual subtleties.
The Latin name ‘Phoebus’ comes from the Greek ‘phoibos’, it was used as a cognomen for the ‘shining’, ‘bright’ Apollo, god of the sun. In the various Greek city states the word was used different, therefore the meaning is - I read in a large German archeological encyclopedia - ‘völlig düster’. I am happy with wonderment and not knowing. And I enjoy Phoebus in the early morning, bringing that enchanting silver light
