Hellen van Meene (Alkmaar, 1972) studeerde in 1996 af aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Ze brak internationaal door met haar intieme portretten van jonge meisjes die balanceren op de drempel naar volwassenheid. Het gaat Van Meene er niet om de identiteit of persoonlijkheid van haar modellen vast te leggen. Om die reden geeft ze haar foto’s bewust geen titels; er is geen verwijzing nodig naar de identiteit van de geportretteerden. Haar foto’s zijn tijdloze portretten waarin een dromerige, soms sprookjesachtige, sfeer de boventoon voert.

Van Meene behoort al twintig jaar tot de internationale top van fotografen en heeft dan ook met name in het buitenland geëxposeerd, afgezien van museale tentoonstellingen in het Fotomuseum Den Haag en Huis Marseille.
