Ritme en locatiespecificiteit zijn twee kenmerken die het werk van Cevdet Erek typeren. Erek combineert video, geluid en beelden, vaak in een poging om de waarneming en ervaring van de kijker van een bepaalde ruimte te veranderen. De instinctieve logica van de kijker wordt onderzocht en de zintuigen worden geprikkeld. Interessant is dat Erek rationele componenten - zoals verwijzingen naar architectuur en lineaire tijd - weet te combineren met instinctieve impulsen, waardoor de kloof tussen twee zogenaamd tegenovergestelde sferen wordt geëgaliseerd. Tijdens zijn architectuurstudies aan de Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts, werkte Cevdet Erek (1974, Istanboel, Turkije) bij verschillende architecturale praktijken en was hij medeoprichter van de muziekband Nekropsi. In 2003 verliet hij het masterprogramma op MSU voor het Centrum voor geavanceerde studies in de muziek (MIAM) van de Technische Universiteit van Istanboel, waar hij Sound Engineering & Design studeerde en van 2002 tot 2011 werkte als onderzoeksassistent. Erek was een artist in residence aan de Rijksakademie in Amsterdam tussen 2005-2006. Hij woont en werkt momenteel, zowel als kunstenaar, leraar en muzikant in Istanboel, Turkije.

Cevdet Erek presenteerde zijn monumentale installatie ÇIN in het Turkse paviljoen op de 57e Biënnale van Venetië. In 2018 had hij solotentoonstellingen in MUAC, Mexico City, Lydgalleriet in Bergen (NO) en een solo-show InSitu in het MuHKA in Antwerpen (BE). Verwachte shows zijn onder andere een solo in Hamburger Bahnhof (2019). Cevdet Erek werd genomineerd voor de Jameel Prize 4. Eerder nam de kunstenaar deel aan de 14e Istanbul Biënnale (2015), de Biënnale van Marrakech (2013), de 11e Sarjah Biënnale (2013) en dOCUMENTA 13 (2012), die werd gevolgd door een publicatie van dezelfde titel uitgegeven door Walther König. Een versie van zijn installaties voor deze biënnales werd getoond tijdens Room of Rhythms - Curva op MAXXI in Rome als onderdeel van de tentoonstelling 'Open Museum Open City' (2014). De Rulers and Rhythm Studies van Cevdet Erek werden gepresenteerd in de collectie van het Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam en tijdens de 12e Istanbul Biënnale en 7th Asia Pacific Triennial in Brisbane. Eerdere institutionele solotentoonstellingen van zijn werk werden georganiseerd door Heidelberger en Kasseler Kunstverein, Spike Island in Bristol - getiteld 'Alt Üst' (2014) - en 'Week' (2012) in Kunsthalle Basel, Zwitserland. Onder zijn sound / muziekwerk bevinden zich zijn sound en muziekrichting voor Kaan Müjdeci's speelfilm Sivas (71e Filmfestival van Venetië - Special Jury Prize, 2014), en co-design voor muziek en geluid voor de langspeelfilm Frenzy (72e film in Venetië) van Emin Alper Festival - Speciale Jury Prijs, 2015).
