Flannigan schildert portretten van fictieve figuren in olieverf en aquarel. Sommige personen lijken min of meer alledaags, maar weer anderen zijn verontrustend in hun verschijning of ambigu en weer anderen heel verleidelijk. In plaats van naar modellen of foto's te werken, ontstaan Flannigans fictieve personen uit haar verbeelding, sterk gevoed door haar herinneringen van het alledaagse leven. Voor Flannigan breidt het proces van een portret schilderen zich uit over vele maanden: het houdt een zoektocht in naar het identificeren van een bepaald persoon en diens denkbeeldige context. In de verbeeldingen van haar personen worden allerlei gegevens aangebracht: sociale status, klasse, (familie)-verhoudingen en sexe. In feite zijn haar werken helemaal geen portretten maar visualisaties van een collectief bewustzijn.
Marktpositie
De uit Edinburgh afkomstige Moyna Flannigan wordt beschouwd als één van Schotlands toonaangevende figuratieve schilders. Haar ironische en scherpzinnige observaties van de moderne mens en maatschappij wordt op geheel eigen wijze in haar werken in beeld gebracht. Moyna Flannigan (1963, Kirkcaldy, Schotland) studeerde aan het Edinburgh College of Art en ontving haar MFA aan de Yale University School of Art.
