Andrew Bush behaalde in 1982 zijn MFA in Fotografie aan Yale. Hij verhuisde in 1989 naar Los Angeles en werkt sindsdien aan zijn Vector Portraits-serie.

Door de uitgestrektheid van de regio spenderen de inwoners van Los Angeles veel tijd achter het stuur, in een airconditioned huiskamer op wielen die een intrigerende mengeling van publiek en privaat terrein is. Bush reed door de straten en over de snelwegen van Los Angeles, de middenformaat camera bevestigd aan de passagiersstoel. Bij stoplichten, in de file of rijdend met snelheden van 30 tot 120 km/u bediende Bush de camera door middel van een draadontspanner, telkens als hij pal naast een andere auto reed. Daardoor hebben Bush’ kleurenfoto’s allemaal eenzelfde kader. Het fotokader vangt de auto, het zijraam vormt een kader rond de bestuurder. Binnen dat dubbele kader zien we curieuze combinaties van bestuurders en automerken, van leeftijden en kleuren. Een lust voor het voyeuristisch oog: de zich onbespied wanende automobilisten zijn bij de weg, bij hun gedachten, bij hun conversatie met passagiers of bij hun autoradio.

Andrew Bush's werk is vaak tentoongesteld, zowel in solo- en groepshows. Zijn werk was onder andere te zien in het Metropolitan Museum of Art ( New York), Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), Davis Museum en Cultural Center aan Wellesley College (Wellesley, Massachusetts) en Staatliche Kunsthalle (Baden-Baden, Duitsland). Bush's werk is opgenomen in tal van prominente openbare collecties zoals die van het Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), Art Institute of Chicago (Chicago), het Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), het Museum of Modern Art (New York), The Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The George Eastman House (Rochester, New York) en The Victoria & Albert Museum (Londen). Andrew Bush woont en werkt in Los Angeles.
