Marinka Reuten (b. Emmen, the Netherlands) is a Dutch visual artist whose practice explores the interplay between graphic design and autonomous artistic expression. Her earliest encounter with art came at the age of thirteen, during a formative stay with her aunt, artist and educator Antoinette Reuten, in Rotterdam. Surrounded by paintings, books, and a life steeped in creativity, she recognized for the first time the possibility of living with art.
Reuten studied at the AKI Academy of Art and Design in Enschede, where an intensive foundation year introduced her to painting and sculpture before she specialized in graphic design, inspired by the politically engaged French collective Grapus. After graduating, she established herself as a freelance designer in Amsterdam, producing theatre posters, newspaper supplements, and book designs, as well as a postage stamp for the Dutch postal service. From 1997 to 1999, she expanded her practice in Lisbon before returning to Amsterdam, where she developed a client base that included the Jewish Cultural Quarter, the Netherlands Film Festival, and de Volkskrant, for which she helped design the Volkskrant Magazine.
While her design career flourished, Reuten consistently pursued her personal artistic work, maintaining a long-running dialogue with her aunt, who later directed a gallery in Amsterdam. In 2022, she shifted her focus entirely to her autonomous practice. Her debut presentation took place at the (re)Discoveries art fair in Amsterdam in 2024. The following year, her work was shown in group exhibitions at Gallery Fanny Freytag (Amsterdam), Yellow Gallery (Leiden), and This Art Fair (Amsterdam).
Reuten lives and works in Amsterdam.
