Luke McCowan (1998) graduated with a bachelor’s of fine art from Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht in 2021. He is now living in den Haag, where he also has his painting studio.
Luke McCowan’s paintings explore his fascination with nature and how humans interact with it. Using techniques and tools that he has developed in his studio, McCowan recreates natural textures like rock, wood, and water ripples to ground his modern painting aesthetics to a transcendent awe of the seamless, effortless natural world we live in. In doing so, he hopes to remind people of the beauty that comes from things that take time and absence of human control to be fully realized in our relentlessly fast-moving lives.
With the support of the Mondriaanfonds, I am currently working towards a project tethered to den Haag’s nature parks like the Bos and the Duinen. I will be volunteering with the local conservation workers and let that time inspire my practice in a series of figurative works. If selected for Springboard Art Fair, I would be showing a combination of works from this new project as well as my more established series’.
