Het werk van Alke Schmidt combineert een mooie vorm met tot nadenken stemmende onderwerpen. Schilderen is vaak verweven met de decoratieve patronen van gevonden stoffen, gestikt of bedrukt, geselecteerd vanwege hun historische, culturele of symbolische associaties. Door de rol van de kunstenaar als maker en kritische burger samen te smelten, gebruikt Alke de visueel verleidelijke kwaliteiten van haar werken om hedendaagse sociale en ecologische onrechtvaardigheden aan de kaak te stellen. Haar werk plaatst die kwesties ook in een historische context en weerspiegelt Alke's overtuiging dat we ons met het verleden moeten bezighouden om de wereld van vandaag te begrijpen - en te verbeteren.
In verschillende recente projecten heeft Alke zich gericht op het omgaan met historische museumcollecties en erfgoedsites, waarbij hij hun hedendaagse relevantie benadrukte. In 2021 had ze een grote solotentoonstelling getiteld Justice, Freedom & Bread in het Rydals Museum, gevestigd in de belangrijkste historische textielfabriek van Zweden. De tentoonstelling bouwde voort op haar eerdere werk over de politiek van wereldwijde textieltoeleveringsketens in het verleden en het heden, en hoe de textielindustrie mensen op verschillende continenten beïnvloedt en verbindt. Dit omvatte solotentoonstellingen in de William Morris Gallery (2014/15), de Cromford Mills World Heritage Site (2015), het People's History Museum, Manchester (2017), evenals het door Arts Council England ondersteunde project Wonder and Dread, bestaande uit van een residentie en solotentoonstelling in het Bradford Industrial Museum (2018) en een nieuwe locatiespecifieke opdracht voor Salts Mill, Saltaire (momenteel te zien in Salts Mill's People and Process Gallery).
In 2020 reageerde Alke op de Covid-pandemie met Pandemic Spring, haar visuele dagboek van de Covid-19-pandemie, waarbij infectiegegevens werden gecombineerd met observatietekeningen van planten die in de lente opkwamen, tentoongesteld in een soloshow in PontArte Gallery, Maastricht.
In 2019 was Alke curator van SWARM, een tentoonstelling in Vestry House Museum met nieuw werk van haarzelf en 4 andere kunstenaars die reageerden op de crisis waarmee onze bestuivende insecten worden geconfronteerd. De tentoonstelling, die zich uitstrekte tot in de bestuivervriendelijke tuin van het museum, ging vergezeld van een uitgebreid evenementenprogramma voor alle leeftijden als onderdeel van Waltham Forest's 2019 Borough of Culture-feesten.
Sinds het afronden van haar MA Fine Art aan de John Cass School of Art in Londen, heeft Alke veel geëxposeerd in solo- en groepstentoonstellingen in het VK en internationaal, in samenwerking met musea, curatoren, galerieën en non-profitorganisaties. Ze is ook een groot voorstander van lokale kunstinitiatieven en evenementen.
Alke's werk bevindt zich in privécollecties in het VK, Frankrijk, Duitsland, Nederland, Zwitserland, Spanje, de VS en Australië, evenals in de collecties van de Arkwright Society, de City Lit en Walthamstow's Vestry House Museum. Alke woont en werkt in Londen.

Since completing her MA Fine Art at John Cass School of Art in London, Alke has exhibited widely in solo and group shows in the UK and internationally, working with museums, curators, galleries and nonprofit organisations. She is also a strong supporter of local arts initiatives and events.
Alke's work is in private collections in the UK, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, the U.S. and Australia, as well as in the collections of the Arkwright Society, the City Lit and Walthamstow's Vestry House Museum. Alke lives and works in London.
