Willem Boel (Sint-Niklaas,1983) is a Belgian artist living and working in Ghent. Since 2009 he has been working on an interdisciplinary oeuvre, with a focus on installation. His in situ installations, performance and two dimensional works mainly focus on the three dimensional. His industrial iron and skeletal steel structures act as a carrier for visual information; the open structures are witnesses of an industrial history.
They carry the marks and bruises of intensive labour and repetitive actions.
Willem Boel primarily works in series, with only a few exceptions. His most important series include ‘The Reward Paintings’ ‘De Nieuwe Molens’, ‘Pare feu’ and ‘Sancho Don’t Care’.
His works are primarily exhibited in Belgium but have been shown globally. In 2015, Willem Boel won the prestigious Grand Prix at the Salon de Montrouge after his work in Palais de Tokyo (Paris). In 2018 he exhibited at the Museum M in Leuven and a solo show in Loods 12 in Wetteren, both with great success. The chef d’oeuvre ‘Sancho Don’t care #05’ is currently on exhibition around Europe being shown in various locations, including Latvia, Denmark, France and Belgium. In 2020, his outdoor work ‘Deer Fountain’ was a part of the famous art trail ‘Contrei Live’ in Belgium.
In ten years Willem Boel has taken part in more than seventy solo and group shows around Europe, significantly his solo show at the Bruthaus gallery in Belgium, and has been awarded prizes and grants for his work.
