Julie van der Vaart is een in België gevestigde fotografische kunstenaar en docent, die verschillende experimentele analoge print en druk technieken gebruikt om denkbeeldige, soms droomachtige, interpretaties van het lichaam en de wereld te creëren. Van jongs af aan was ze gefascineerd door ruimte en tijd. Zo verbeeldde ze zich als kind de oneindigheid van het universum of “de duisternis” van het niets. Deze nieuwsgierigheid resulteerde in een andere kijk op de werkelijkheid waar ze nog steeds inspiratie uit haalt voor haar werk.
Haar meest recente projecten zijn geïnspireerd op imaginaire (non-lineaire) tijd en het zijn. Ze stelt zichzelf de vragen wat het betekent om als menselijk lichaam te bestaan en wat de werkelijkheid echt is - welke voortkomen uit haar ervaringen met depersonalisatie. De materialiteit van de print wordt gebruikt als een instrument om deze ontastbare fenomenen te onderzoeken, maar het wordt ook gebruikt als een manier voor de kunstenaar om in contact te komen met de realiteit, om geworteld te zijn in het hier en nu.
Julie's werk nodigt de kijker uit om zich los te maken van het vertrouwde dagelijkse bestaan en mee te reizen in haar eigen universum, om zo mogelijks de eigen relatie met tijd en zijn op een andere manier te bekijken.

Beyond Time
"Wat Julie van der Vaarts werk verfrissend maakt is hoe ze de wereld en zichzelf ziet vanuit de kosmos, als een nietig stipje in een constant veranderend, oneindig groot geheel. Die zelfrelativering lezen we in de vrijheid en de wendbaarheid van haar fotografie, dat duidelijk niet de taal is van een technische controlefreak, maar wel van een uiterst gevoelig persoon die kan loslaten. We staan hier oog in oog met de taal van iemand met een grote interesse voor tijd- en ruimtebeleving. Niet de klassieke lineaire tijd en een vastgepinde ruimte fascineert de Nederlandse fotografe, maar wel de tijd en ruimte die we ons amper kunnen voorstellen."

"In haar fotoserie wordt het landschap opgevat als een territorium dat zowel vertrouwd als onbekend is, tegelijk anoniem en universeel. Haar prachtige donkere vergezichten roepen romantische associaties op van het sublieme in de uitgestrektheid en bijna onbegrijpelijke schoonheid van de natuur. Tegelijkertijd plaatst ze haar werk binnen de complexiteit van de hedendaagse wetenschap: astrofysica en theorieën over tijd. Haar landschappen leggen slechts een spoor in de tijd vast; ze roepen geen nihilisme op, maar een gevoel van stille troost."

Julie van der Vaart is een fotograaf en docent geboren in Maastricht, Nederland (1988), woonachtig en werkend in België. Na een Master in Fine-Arts, Fotografie aan de Media, Arts & Design-faculteit Genk en een Master-na-masteropleiding Research in Art and Design aan Sint Lucas Antwerpen, volgde ze een jaar residentie aan de Van Eyck Academie Maastricht. Hier richtte ze zich op de productie van in eigen beheer uitgegeven fotoboeken. Recent verscheen bij uitgeverij Void haar boek Blind Spot, waarin haar werk van de afgelopen zes jaar is gebundeld in één uitgave.
