Over RAVNIKAR GALLERY SPACE
RAVNIKAR GALLERY is a contemporary art gallery dedicated to the presentation and promotion of visual culture by both Slovenian and international artists. We offer a diverse platform and a rich calendar of events to support established artists, while raising the profile of emerging young creatives who may just be making a name for themselves.
The gallery has been run by its founder and director Piera Ravnikar since 2017. Located in the heart of Ljubljana, the gallery is nestled in the city's cultural district, between the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Cankarjev dom - the largest Slovenian cultural centre - and the Museum of Modern Art. Since its inception, the vision of the gallery has been to showcase local art production and its integration with international trends through outward-facing activities. Our aim is to promote a dynamic and meaningful exchange between artists, curators, collectors and the general public through the development of international partnerships and local networks.
RAVNIKAR GALLERY also nurtures a more specific thematic focus. The artists we represent broadly use their work to investigate, analyse and evaluate space. The exploration of architecture and spaces - whether physical or metaphorical - stays central to their work. We showcase the media of contemporary painting, drawing and sculpture with all their complex qualities and in all their unpredictable forms.
The focus on the semantics of space is most clearly expressed in our new project space, R SPACE, which opened in September 2021 in collaboration with the Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU). Like the main gallery, the project space sits in a small but significant spot in Slovenia’s capital, among important cultural monuments and architectural landmarks, such as the National and University Library (NUK), the City Museum of Ljubljana and the Križanke complex. R SPACE is intended for the youngest generation of artists. It’s a place for self-discovery, where they can develop their own style, explore the space they occupy as artists and get more familiar with the systems behind the contemporary art market.
RAVNIKAR GALLERY SPACE is a proud co-founder of ETC. magazine. This annual publication showcases exceptional artistic talent from the Baltic to the Balkans. Each issue is dedicated to a single topic, promoting emerging artists and inspiring new dialogues, challenges and collaborations.
The gallery was also central to the foundation of Ljubljana Art Weekend, an international platform which is being developed in cooperation with the Cukrarna and the City of Ljubljana. The initiative, like its European counterparts, is committed to the appropriate presentation and promotion of contemporary visual art. Once a year, as part of the extended weekend programme, we join forces with other galleries, private collectors, museums, public spaces, artist-run initiatives, collaborations and projects dedicated to contemporary art. It’s a chance for art lovers from home and abroad to visit Ljubljana and experience our city’s vibrant creative scene first-hand.
RAVNIKAR GALLERY SPACE provides a valuable showcase for a broad range of practices and creative backgrounds, including painting, drawing, sculpture and installation. The gallery is purposefully located in the capital’s cultural triangle, between the Museum of Modern Art, Academy of Fine Arts and Design and Cankarjev dom, a national center for arts and culture.
Representing established and emerging artists from Slovenia and international art scenes, RAVNIKAR GALLERY SPACE offers a venue for solo or group exhibitions, workshops and community-driven programming as well as a relaxed and social gallery space for locals and tourists to browse. The venue is closely connected to SKALINADA, an artist—in—residence project based in Croatia, Island Krk, which operates parallel to the gallery.
