Bastiaan Woudt heeft een razendsnelle groei doorgemaakt in de wereld van de hedendaagse fotografie. Nadat hij vijf jaar geleden zonder ervaring of formele opleiding zijn eigen fotopraktijk begon, heeft hij zich ontwikkeld tot een fotograaf met zijn eigen kenmerkende stijl - abstract maar scherp, met een sterke focus op detail. Als student van de geschiedenis van de fotografie, geleerd door het verslinden van fotoboeken en het bezoeken van musea en beurzen, heeft Bastiaan Woudt een sterke voorkeur voor klassieke onderwerpen, zoals portretten en naakten, en in zijn werk zien we verwijzingen naar illustere periodes uit de fotografie, zoals het surrealisme en zowel de mode- als de documentairefotografie van de jaren zestig en zeventig. Maar door een geraffineerd gebruik van zowel camera- als postproductietechnieken, die hij zichzelf heeft aangeleerd door met beide intensief te experimenteren, geeft hij zijn eigen grafische en geheel eigentijdse draai aan het klassieke.
Het werk van Bastiaan Woudt werd tentoongesteld in musea, op beurzen en in galeries wereldwijd. In 2014 werd hij verkozen tot New Dutch Photography Talent, in 2016 werd hij door het prestigieuze tijdschrift The British Journal of Photography uitgeroepen tot een van de grootste talenten van dit moment, wat zijn positie als een talent in opkomst verder bevestigt. In 2017 won hij de Van Vlissingen Art Foundation Award.
"Mijn inspiratie komt uit vele vormen van kunst, maar in het bijzonder, de oude meesters van de fotografie zoals Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Man Ray, Bill Brandt, allemaal geweldige geesten. Zij weten wat er nodig is om een interessant beeld te maken: Dynamiek, beweging, imperfectie, gevoel. Naast fotografie zijn er nog veel meer manieren waarop ik geïnspireerd raak. Schilderijen, de manier waarop de Hollandse meesters het licht zagen is buitengewoon. Ik geloof dat je bij kunstfotografie een kleine droomwereld moet creëren: een uniek inzicht in de geest van de fotograaf. Zwart en wit helpen om onderscheid te maken met de werkelijkheid. Kleur vind ik te afleidend."
