Over dépendance
dépendance was founded in late 2003. The gallery sees itself as more than a commercial space and shares its artists’ critical views.
Since the very beginning, dépendance introduced young artists to Brussels when they were relatively unknown and are now still affiliated with the gallery; dépendance held the first international exhibitions for artists such as Sergej Jensen (2003), Haegue Yang (2004), Michaela Eichwald (2005), Jana Euler (2010) and Peter Wächtler (2013). Thomas Bayrle, Michael Krebber, Richard Aldrich and Ed Atkins all showed in Belgium for the first time with dépendance. The gallery tries to strike a balance between emerging and more established artists. In order to open up more possibilities for artistic creation, the gallery decided to expand; as of September 2014 dépendance is operating out both rue du marche aux porcs 4 and 8. The renewed gallery space marks a new phase in the development of dépendance. Since Summer 2016, the gallery again represents the Belgium artist duo Jos de Gruyter & Harald Thys.
Gallery artists are shown by important exhibition venues worldwide, such as the 58th Venice Biennale (Jos de Gruyter & Harald Thys for the Belgium Pavilion, Ed Atkins at the Arsenal), Ludwig Museum (Haegue Yang), New Museum, New York (Thomas Bayrle), Münster Sculpture Project 2017 (Oscar Tuazon, Nora Schultz), MUKHA Antwerp (Peter Wächtler) Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (Ed Atkins, Jana Euler), Portikus, Frankfurt (Haegue Yang, Jana Euler, Jos de Gruyter & Harald Thys), Chisenhale Gallery, London (Michaela Eichwald, Peter Wächtler), Renaissance Society, Chicago (Nora Schultz, Josef Strau, Peter Wächtler), Dallas Museum of Art (Lucie Stahl), Kunsthalle Bern (Merlin Carpenter, Michael Krebber), Museum Ludwig, Cologne (Michael Krebber, Oscar Tuazon), MoMA, NY (Henrik Olesen, Richard Aldrich, Michaela Eichwald, Haegue Yang), Kunsthalle Zurich (Nora Schultz, Ed Atkins, Jana Euler) among others.
