De Belgische kunstenaar Steven Antonio Manes, met Italiaanse roots, is één van onze jongste aanwinsten.
Bruthausgallery biedt deze jonge kunstenaar een introductietentoonstelling aan in de Frontspace van de galerie.
Manes' roots liggen in het zuidelijkste deel van Italië. Het is een regio die bekend staat om zijn pure schoonheid, maar
die tegelijkertijd, door de geschiedenis heen, gekenmerkt wordt door armoede. Antonio's
Antonio's grootouders kwamen naar België uit noodzaak, om te werken in de Kempische Kolenmijnen. (staal in
aarde).
In Bruthausgallery zinspeelt Steven Antonio Manes op de vergankelijkheid van de wereld en existentiële
gedachten in zijn abstract expressionistische tekeningen en op de Arte Povera geïnspireerde sculpturen. In zijn
sculpturen gebruikt Steven Antonio staal. Ford auto motorkappen, geproduceerd in Ford Genk waar veel
Italiaans-Belgische arbeiders werkten. We zien ook sculpturen, direct gegoten in negatieve mallen, met
met de hand uit de aarde.
Het werk van Antonio lijkt verankerd in de Arte Povera, voortkomend uit een unieke, individuele en
persoonlijke behoefte.
Het is niet alleen de zoektocht naar zijn wortels die Steven Antonio als kunstenaar kenmerkt, tegelijkertijd
tegelijkertijd schuilt er een verlangen naar het verlaten land, evenals het gewicht van die geschiedenis in
Antonio's werk. De wortels van de schoonheid is de aarde, de strijd om te overleven is het staal.
De titel van deze tentoonstelling 'Terra e Acciaio' is Italiaans voor 'Aarde en Staal'.
