Lana Mesić (b. 1987, Yugoslavia) is an artist living and working in Rotterdam, NL. She is invited to exhibit in the gallery exhibition “Terratology” on invitation of Anne Geene. At the core of her practice lies a fascination with how we—both individually and collectively—fill in the gaps of what we cannot see. She has long been drawn to the strange, invisible forces that shape our everyday lives.
A visual artist with a transdisciplinary approach, Mesić moves seamlessly between photography, sculpture, assemblage, video, books, and social interventions in the public realm. Her work navigates the transience andchaos of this world, skillfully blending urgent social issues with personal experience to reflect the often turbulent state of contemporary society. At times, her practice engages with the current zeitgeist; at others, it veers into anachronism, digging deep into social, psychological, and ethical dilemmas that transcend time.
Mesić’s process is rooted in observation, analysis, and collection—followed by playful yet critical responses. This thoughtful method allows her to address complex social and political issues while maintaining a mischievous, engaging tone that reflects her trickster spirit. By provoking reflection through humorand subtle interventions, she creates space for viewers to reconsider the conventions that shape their world.
Ultimately, Mesić is a playful adventurer in both the physical and conceptual realms. Her work is precise yet unpredictable, bold yet introspective, as she continually explores how we, as individuals, navigate the visible and invisible forces that govern our lives.
A graduate of St. Joost Academy of Arts and Design in Breda with BA and MFA in Photography (2012), Mesić has been supported by the Mondriaan Fonds ever since and has exhibited internationally, from the InternationalCriminal Court in The Hague to PhotoEspaña in Madrid, Photo London, and institutions across Europe, Asia, and the United States. She was longlisted for the Prix de Rome and invited to the Unseen/Grolsch Residency in London. Her work was published in a.o. De Volkskrant, Het Parool, NRC, VICE, Unseen Magazine, British Journal of Photography, Professionele Fotografie, La Liberte, CBC Canada, and many other press outlets.
Her work is included in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, Kunstcollectie AMC, LUMC, and private collections.
