Until 7 December, Rademakers Gallery in Amsterdam presents the fifth edition of 'SOFT!', an exhibition that highlights the versatility and significance of textile art in a unique way. Textile, which envelops us daily like a second skin, not only influences our physical comfort but also touches on deeper emotions. It offers protection and security while also serving as a medium for free expression, community and emotional well-being. In 'SOFT!', this intriguing relationship between textiles and well-being is explored in a poetic manner.
The exhibition focuses on the ways in which textile art can connect us. The displayed works form a boundary-blurring mix of fashion, design and visual art. The gallery showcases an impressive selection of works by artists such as Sofie Aaldering, Mina Abouzahra, Coen Derickx, Mae Engelgeer, Yamuna Forzani, Anne von Freyburg, Mariekke Jansen, Ronald van der Kemp, Julia Kiryanova, Kelly Konings, Lisa Konno, Antoine Peters, Simone Post, Joana Schneider and Preta Wolzak.
Mae Engelgeer combines ancient techniques with modern influences. Her works, characterised by subtle colours and patterns, create a harmonious dialogue between textures and tactility. Yamuna Forzani celebrates queer ballroom culture through inclusive fashion and performances that bring communities together while challenging the boundaries of gender and identity. Anne von Freyburg uses textiles and embroidery to critically examine traditional notions of femininity, blending Rococo elements with modern materials.
Mariekke Jansen creates playful and instantly recognisable furniture pieces from wool waste, experimenting with techniques like tufting and felting. The result is lively and distinctive objects. Ronald van der Kemp, a pioneer in sustainable couture, shows how leftover materials can be transformed into innovative art forms, advocating for more ethics in fashion. Julia Kiryanova’s multidisciplinary works delve into themes such as sensuality and vulnerability, inviting the viewer to explore the complex relationship between reality and fantasy.
'SOFT!' is not just a visual experience; it also invites the visitor to reflect on the power of materials we often take for granted. The exhibition shows how textile art can contribute to a sense of safety, self-expression and connection, offering a platform for artists who each, in their own way, bring new meanings to this versatile medium.
