In November of the last year, Het Grote Kunstkoopboek by Young Collectors Circle founders Nadine van den Bosch and Nienke van der Wal was released. The book, an inspiring and handy guide that takes you by the hand in a sometimes intimidating art world, tells you why collecting art is so much fun and why it is for everyone. What tips do they share for setting out on your own?
Artists often reflect on current events in our society today. Therefore, it makes sense to collect art by artists who reflect on topics that affect your life here and now, such as racism, climate change, #metoo; perhaps more so than collecting art made by earlier generations. That is not to say they are not important: every contemporary artist stands on the shoulders of those who came before him or her or them, and to understand the impact and meaning of art, knowledge of art history can be very helpful. But while older generations of artists have also addressed important issues, their struggles may not resonate with you - simply because they are not yours.
Who are these artists dealing with social issues? Artists like Filip Van Dingenen, for example, whose work looks at how we interact with different ecosystems, or Charlotte Dumas, for whom the role of animals in our society is central to her work.
Project spaces such as Vleeshal in Middelburg also present artists who, in the words of director Roos Gortzak, "ask questions about contemporary society in an interesting way." In Het Grote Kunstkoopboek, she states: "We develop new works together with (inter)national artists, specifically created for our unique, gothic exhibition space. De Vleeshal is a monument that is revived every three months. (...) I think it is important to make space for experiment and research. At the risk of failing, but that is irrelevant: it is important that talented people are given the confidence to develop. At Vleeshal, that is what we do."
On Friday, January 19, Nadine van den Bosch and Nienke van der Wal will present a mini master class "How To Look At Art" at De Drvkkery bookstore in Middelburg (in Dutch).Special guest is Roos Gortzak, director and curator of Vleeshal. For more information and to sign up:click here.
