Last month Het Grote Kunstkoopboek by Young Collectors Circle founders Nadine van den Bosch and Nienke van der Wal was released. The book, an inspiring and handy guide that takes you by the hand in a sometimes intimidating art world, tells you why collecting art is so much fun and why it is for everyone. What tips do they share for setting out on your own?
By buying art, you not only surround yourself with beautiful works of art from which you draw inspiration but you can also reinforce an artist's message. One of the most interesting aspects of collecting contemporary art is that you can help shape the future of the art world - rather than looking back at what has come before. Artists are pioneers and are often at the forefront of change. As a collector, you can choose whose voices you think are important, and amplify those voices by supporting them.
Collector Milan Josepa says the following about this in Het Grote Kunstkoopboek:
''I can also find art interesting when it evokes an unpleasant emotion, this gives entrance for research and self-reflection. It can also be the case that I don't feel anything at all. This is both difficult and interesting, because I see art in particular as an important entry point to our feelings. When I delve more into an artist or exhibition, these feelings can change again. Everything I have hanging at home is the representation of a search for myself. Do I recognize myself in the artist or the story? With a Black father and a white mother, I like to represent Black and white, but also male and female and everything in between.’'
Collectors of contemporary art are part of shaping its future: they can not only facilitate experimentation and innovation, but also right past wrongs. For example, by collecting artists who have traditionally been overlooked, such as women artists and/or artists from non-Western backgrounds whose voices have been -unjustly- ignored for centuries. Even if you are buying art for the first time or just starting to collect, you can contribute to creating change.
For example, Gallery Rademakers focuses particularly on women artists and Ellen de Bruijne Projects often shows artists whose art practice tells a clear message.

On Dec. 17, Nadine van den Bosch Nienke van der Wal will host a panel on art collecting at Art Antwerp, with a.o. galeries Jaring Dürst Britt (Galerie Dürst Britt & Mayhew) and artist Maxime Brigou (represented by FRED&FERRY).
