From 1 to 5 November 2023, Affordable Art Fair will hold its seventeenth edition at De Kromhouthal in the middle of bustling Amsterdam Noord. During this fair, an array of contemporary artworks from 70 (inter)national galleries can be discovered. Sections this year include 'Spotlight on Spain' with a focus on Spanish art styles, 'Urban Art & Beyond' showcases street art, 'Emerging Artists' pays tribute to young creators and 'The Happy Trip' displays a mural by Flemish artist duo Roxeha. Rademakers Gallery, Homecoming Gallery and Gallery Untitled show mostly colourful, feminist and light-hearted art.
Rademakers Gallery (Booth C7) is taking as many as 11 promising artists to this year's fair: Anne Mei Poppe, Mickey Philips, Yamuna Forzani, Chris Rijk, Coen Derickx, Mae Engelgeer, Victor de Groot, Lisette van Hoogenhuyze, Joana Schneider, Christina de Korte and Quinn Zeljak. The gallery surprises with a mix of textile designs, intriguing paintings, intimate wall hangings and joyful ceramics. With their imaginative expressiveness, visual composition and joyful colours as the unifying factor.
Tip: Emerging artist Anne Mei Poppe will create a work of art on site on 2 and 3 November 18:00-21:30. A great way to get an insight into her creative process.
Homecoming Gallery (Booth C14) brings a mix of artists from around the world with unique mixed media pieces by Brazilian Alice Quaresma, the book 'Hueism' by Derrick Ofosu Boateng from Ghana, new limited edition pieces by American Hayley Eichenbaum, illustrations by Dutch artist Eva Bartels and tapestries by talented Julia Kiryanova from Kazakhstan. Given that the gallery focuses mostly on photography, especially the art of Bartels and Kiryanova offers a surprising element within the presentation.
Gallery Untitled (Booth A2) shows works by artist duo Nicole Driessens and Ivo van den Baar with a wink to autumn: inspired by various leaves and herbs, they immortalise these visual elements with wool felt in soft green, maroon and cobalt blue tones. In addition, the gallery brings lightness with the playful and humorous art of Florian & Ko, Michela Castagnaro and Cirque de Pepin. Heavier in weight are Sander Buijk's concrete sculptures, which, with Johan Kleinjan's vibrant paintings and Octavie Wolters' poetic linocuts, create a varied booth.
Tip: Want to see more from Driessens & van den Baar? Galerie Untitled is showing their exhibition 'Collateral Damage' until 7 January 2024. Read more here
Special programmes
• The first art encounter begins with the monumental installations of Argentine architect Alejandro Propato. In front of the entrance is the piece ROAS, an installation of six pyramid-shaped prisms. With Fuchsia Deployment, he weaves 4500 metres of rope on the ceiling of De Kromhoutthal which gives an atmospheric addition to the bar in the middle of the fair.
• Prefer to visit the fair in the evening? On Thursday 2 and Friday 3 November, Affordable Art Fair will be open until 21:30. Live painting sessions, artist interventions and book signings will take place during these 'Late Nights'.
• The fair is hosting a family preview on Saturday 4 November 10:00-11:00 so that families with young children and babies can experience the art to the utmost.
• With their project 'The Happy Trip', Roxanne Wegscheider and Denis Auspert aka ROXEHA invite visitors to bring to life a 5-metre doodle inspired by Keith Haring, Romero Britto, Tom Wesselmann and Niki de Saint Phalle.
